Washington DC! Capital of the great USA and also a serious contender for Cupcake Capital of America! I have never been to a city with so many cupcakeries! DC sets the bar pretty high. Nearly all of the cupcakes we ate were amazing!
I’m afraid to tally how many cupcakes I ate in the four days we were there. This is a super long post due to all the cupcakes we ate.
We made two visits to Red Velvet Cupcakery while in DC. I really liked the cupcakes we had at both visits. The second one was with Rebecca from I Wanna Be A Domestic Goddess! I love blogging. I have met up with people from all over the place.
Black Velvet (Gluten Free/Vegan) cupcake. Alex loves chocolate and this being vegan was great for him. I was in general impressed with all the cupcake bakeries in America. Nearly all of them had at least one (or more) vegan or gluten free cupcake on offer each day.
Sweet Potato and Marshmallow Cupcake
Red Velvet, of course.
Cute custom wrappers
The Chocolate Hazelnut was seriously amazing
Lovely “Summertime” cupcake (lemon and coconut)
Another birthday cake cupcake
The shop is small but you’re allowed to sit at the frozen yogurt shop next door to enjoy your cupcake.
Rebecca also took us to Matchbox Pizza. Hello banana daiquiri!
We went to Alexandria, Virginia one morning (just a short subway ride away from the city). For a small town they have 2 cupcake bakeries! Lavender Moon was probably my least favorite of the whole trip. They were not bad cupcakes by any means at all, but we had so many consistently good cupcakes. These just didn’t wow us. It might have been that the frosting on all the cupcakes were cream cheese (we think).
This Chocolate Chocolate cupcake was the best we had. It was lovely and gooey.
Sweet Potato Cupcake
Chocolate and Vanilla
Raspberry
Alexandria Cupcakes were by far my favorite of the ENTIRE trip! It was one of the first times that I ate an amazing cupcake and thought to myself, there is no way that I could make one that even comes close to how delicious this is.
Dark Chocolate and Vanilla. Simple but the best cupcake of my life.
Lemon
Chocolate Guinness
We stopped at Ray’s Hell Burger after visiting Arlington National Cemetery. This is one of Obama’s favorite burger joints.
Super juicy burgers!
And a cherry shake
Hello Cupcake! Not related to the adorable books, “What’s New Cupcake” and “Hello, Cupcake!”
The S’mores cupcake was spectacular. The cake had a great graham cracker taste. You could clearly see though that our cupcakes had baked over and where they had trimmed the sides.
Chocolate Peanut Butter
Sweet Potato Cupcake
Crumbs. They’re the biggest cupcake chain around but I’ve enjoyed their cupcakes in DC and in New York.
Blueberry latte…because why not!
Toffee Crunch. Very flavorful and crunchy!
Cookie Dough
Raspberry
We stopped by Eastern Market and had some amazing pancakes!
We stopped in at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History to see Julia Child’s kitchen.
Seeing her kitchen made me want to see Julia & Julia again and also to read her book!
We also visited Cupcake Wars winners, Sticky Fingers bakery.
They’re a vegan bakery and everything was delicious and amazing! I can see why they won.
Cookies n’ Creme
Lemon and Coconut Cupcake and a mini peanut butter truffle/pie
We were excited to get to Georgetown Cupcake!
We were really surprised that there was no line. I’d read horror stories of people waiting in line for hours!
They were very efficient and serving everyone very quickly. I did feel a bit like a factory though. There were giant pictures and posters advertising “Katherine’s Wedding Special”. They are very good business women but if you walk down the street to Sprinkles they have a small more tasteful display for Cupcake Wars.
Most important though are the cupcakes. I was really surprised! We bought six and five of them tasted great.
Another Birthday Cake
Besides Birthday Cake we had Lemon, Chocolate Squared (not so great), Salted Caramel, Maple Chocolate Chip and Pumpkin Spice. The maple chocolate chip goes in at my second favorite cupcake of the trip. It tasted like a pancake loaded with chocolate chips!
We also stopped at Sprinkles! I got their special Caramel Apple which was a cupcake fatality on our way to the airport. It tasted delicious though!
Baked & Wired was amazing. It was really “hip” inside.
Chocolate? I seriously can’t remember
Chai Tea Latte cupcake which was really nice and pretty unique
Elvis Impersonator AKA The Unporked Elvis
We went to Founding Farmers restaurant for breakfast several times! They had fluffer nutter appetizers. Heaven.
Massive fried french toast logs stuffed with vanilla creme patissiere.
We went to The Sweet Lobby last
Black Forest cupcake that slides in at third favorite cupcake of the whole trip! DC takes the cake for winning all three slots!
Another fatality but they still tasted great! I don’t remember what flavors my friends chose.
Wow, I’m in a sugar coma just reliving all those cupcakes! Read about New Hampshire Cupcakes, Vermont Cupcakes, Maine Cupcakes, Boston Cupcakes, DC and Orlando Cupcakes.

Oh my goodness!!! now that is what I’m talking about!! That is definitely the kind of trip I would have taken! Crumbs are the best cupcakes I have ever eaten. I’ve always wondered if Georgetown cupcakes are as tasty as the hype around them – I used to watch their TV show in the Caribbean…glad that they delivered taste wise as well!! I am salivating at the look of that S’mores cupcake! and I love all the inventive flavours you got to try on the trip…English cupcakeries need to take note! and I love Alexandria – isn’t it the cutest little town, it didn’t have any cupcakeries when I was there 7 years ago though I definitely need to go back!

FUN!!! I live in DC and wasn’t aware of all these great cupcake shops! I’ve had Red Velvet and of course Georgetown cupcakes – now I must explore!!!
I need to go on holiday with you! Whenever I’m in the US, I go on ‘dessert tours’ and do pretty much what you did – eat cake (mostly cupcakes) at all the recommended cake places in a city! Love it!!! Welcome back!
